THE KUMBH MELA
The Kumbh Mela is a mass pilgrimage in which Hindus gather at the river Ganges. Taking place every 12 years the ceremony is one of the largest human congregations on earth and is the world’s largest act of faith. Up to 70 million people have been recorded bathing in the Ganges.
The major event of the festival is the ritual bathing in the Ganges. Religious assemblies and discussions also take place. Those assembled aspire together to be freed from the cycle of life and death and move towards a place which knows no pain or suffering – an eternal life free of sin which cleanses the soul.
The pilgrims come from all walks of life and some travel long distances to be there, with none being too young or too old for the occasion.
